New Rule on Old Vehicles in Delhi: No More Petrol or Diesel 

Starting from July 1, 2025, a new rule has come into effect in Delhi, under which vehicles older than a certain age will no longer be allowed to refuel at petrol pumps.

Which Vehicles Are Affected by This Rule? 

• Diesel vehicles that are more than 10 years old 

• Petrol vehicles that are more than 15 years old 

Whether the vehicle is registered in Delhi or any other state, if it is being used in Delhi, this rule applies. 

Why Was This Decision Taken? 

Air pollution in Delhi is a serious concern. Emissions from old vehicles worsen the air quality. Keeping this in mind, government agencies have taken this step to help improve the environment. 

Does This Rule Apply to CNG Vehicles? 

No, vehicles running on CNG are exempted. They can continue to refuel as before.  

How Is the Rule Being Enforced? 

• Most petrol pumps in Delhi are now equipped with cameras that scan the vehicle’s number plate. 

• The system verifies the age of the vehicle using its registration number. 

• If the vehicle is found to be older than the allowed limit, fuel will not be provided. 

• Violation of the rule may lead to seizure of the vehicle or a fine. 

What Can Vehicle Owners Do? 

1. Transfer the vehicle to another state where the rule is not applicable. 

2. Convert the vehicle into an electric vehicle using a certified electric kit. 

3. Scrap the vehicle and take advantage of government incentives offered under the scrapping policy. 

Public Response 

• Some people believe that deciding solely based on the vehicle’s age is unfair, as many old vehicles are still in good condition. 

• Petrol pump owners have expressed concerns and said they need proper security and technical support to implement the rule effectively
